- I'm not sure if the CTX AD-1970 is available anymore. I think that it
- had been handled by Creative Computers which doesn't seem to carry the
- Amiga anymore. However, an extremely similar model called the CD Solutions
- CD-1401 still exists. The price used to be about $470 US incl. shipping,
- but a few months ago I noticed that US mailorder places raised the price
- about $100. As for the quality, I can't quite say yet. Mine had a few
- problems which I'm trying to get straigtened out with them. At some scanrates
- it suffers from fairly bad geometric distortion (draw a square at one spot in
- the screen and then drag it to another spot and it will suddenly look
- rather rectangular) and when scrolling images up the screen a number of
- little oddities and distortions become apparrent. At times it emits
- a piercing high-pitched noise when used in 15Khz mode. Sometimes it
- happens almost everytime I switch into 15Khz, other times it will go away
- for weeks at a time. In Euro72 it used to emit a faint whistle at times
- which could be gotten rid of by giving the monitor a little shake.
- However all that said, I have talked to a few other people who have this
- monitor and none of them mentioned any of these problems (well actually
- one person's woudln't go into 15Khz mode at all, but then they sent him
- another and it was fine) so it's probably just a freak bum one that I got.
- Aside from those problems, which I hope will be shortly straigtened out, it
- really is a nice monitor (you can get back to me in a month to see
- whether or not things got straigtened out). It has a
- very solid image quality and great controls. NO black borders whatsoever in
- ANY mode and I'm not just talking about after tweaking each mode with moned or
- about after switching to a modes maximum overscan size. Even using the minimum
- basic overscan for a mode, such as 640x400 for DblNTSC, you can bring things
- out to within a millimeter of the edges at worst! Most modes can be stretched
- way beyond the monitor cowling even with no overscan (not that taking things
- that far makes much sense). Even though it is only a rated 1" larger than my
- old 1080, I can easily get a viewable area a good 2" larger. Even though the
- monitor is a multi-scan one it runs cooler than my 1080.
